Inaugurating the fall season, the Downtown Arts Festival is a series of events, artists’ projects, performances, talks and concerts dedicated to the spirit of experimental arts. DAF events take place in various locations throughout lower Manhattan and offer you access to some of the best cutting-edge culture from New York and around the world.
Tokion celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Jamaican soundsystem with the Sound Clash project. The project explores how the early Jamaican sound systems created a musical renaissance from which all elements of Hip Hop and DJ culture can directly trace their roots. The event will be MC-ed by Talib Kweli and will include U-Roy, Kool Herc, and a sound clash between two legendary soundsystems: Sir Coxsone’s Downbeat & King Jammy’s Super Sound. East River between Grand and Canal. 6pm. Free.
M3 Projects presents the sophomore effort of the Digital DUMBO â€˜02 team to open up the floor to artists inspired by technology. This year, patrons can enjoy a more sophisticated collection of works in Photography, Sculpture, Installation, Painting, Digital Moving Image and other media than last year. Festival Hours: September 20th – 22nd, 12 – 6pm. Location: 70 Washington Street, #700 + three annexes on the 4th floor with over 3000 sq feet of gallery space.
