The Hip-Hop Word Count is a searchable ethnographic database built from the lyrics of over 40,000 Hip-Hop songs from 1979 to present day.
The Hip-Hop Word Count describes the technical details of most of your favorite hip-hop songs. This data can then be used to not only figure out interesting stats about the songs themselves, but also describe the culture behind the music.
How can analyzing lyrics teach us about our culture?
The Hip-Hop Word Count locks in a time and geographic location for every metaphor, simile, cultural reference, phrase, rhyme style, meme and socio-political idea used in the corpus of Hip-Hop.
The Hip-Hop Word Count then converts this data into explorable visualisations which help us to comprehend this vast set of cultural data.
This data can be used to chart the migration of ideas and builds a geography of language.

We have developed a rubric that estimates the education level needed to understand each rhyme as well as, rates the artistic sophistication employed through the metaphors, similes, cultural references, consonantal/vocalic alliteration and overall pattern of each rhyme. We calculate the final score by averaging the syntactic (readability measures) and semantic (artistic sophistication) scores of each rhyme. I went to the world premiere of Björk’s new 3D video, “Wanderlust” at Deitch Queens. Directed by the two guy team of Encyclopedia Pictura, who as part of their process, took shrooms and ran out into nature for inspiration (props if they were nekid). The experience of trekking to see a Björk video, at an art gallery, in a part of Queens that during my childhood housed the Flea Market where I shopped for brass name belts, Nikes and BVD’s sparked a few thoughts but I’ll keep it to just this one: 1. The stressed state the art world must be under to be influenced by consumer culture. As seen in Deitch’s trend to have exhibitions as showcases of movie ephemera: Michel Gondry’s The Science Of Sleep and Be Kind Rewind and now Björk’s Wanderlust along with Deitch’s Art Star reality TV show (of which I was a finalist). Prior to Deitch no self respecting Art Dealer would be so “pedestrian”. But these are times where change is certain, growth is not. Deitch is making sure he grows.

That’s because there are no buttons on the damn thing! Humans are still tactile creatures no matter how futuristic we strive to be. The multitouch keyboard is a glimpse of the future but it should be an extra feature on the iPhone until we are able to think our email responses directly into our phones (btw cats at TI & MIT have a prototype device for that).
Microsoft is helping connect iPhone users to MS Exchange Server so Apple can get some of that corporate business, but you can’t possibly write long documents or detailed emails with that touchpad - this is why people are keeping their other phones.
