Lil Wayne: I’m Me

We have developed a rubric that estimates the education level needed to understand each rhyme as well as, rates the artistic sophistication employed through the metaphors, similes, cultural references, consonantal/vocalic alliteration and overall pattern of each rhyme. We calculate the final score by averaging the syntactic (readability measures) and semantic (artistic sophistication) scores of each rhyme. On a scale from 0 (illiterate) to 20 (post-graduate degree). Visit the Hip-Hip Word Count.

Everyone asked for a Lil Wayne wordcount, thinking he would score low. He actually has a lot of 3 syllable words in this song.

rap_wen_i_was_a_kid: We have over 40,000 songs analyzed. Illmatic is one of the albums that we have scores for. We’re just finalizing the private Beta launch. Regular commenters get first invites. Stay tuned and thanks for the comment. T.

Are you going to analyze more of Wayne’s songs/albums?

C, I’ll send you a log on for the search tool that has 40,000 songs. Check your email.

This is a very fascinating experiment y’all are doing. I think it would also be interesting to get some underground Emcees on here (I realize you have thousands of songs done) to see if there is a contrast between the more commercial Hip Hop and more underground music. And personally I would be curious to see how MF Doom would score.

I really like the idea!
When is it going to be online for the public?

Tahero, Could I have a log on for the search tool as well? I am writing an essay about how rappers use labial verbs more often than non-labial verbs and I would gladly share any results that I will find. Thanks a lot!

How do you determine the reading level?

T, I love what you are doing here. Just finished reading your write up in the New Yorker. I’d love to have access to the 40k songs already analyzed. As a longtime hip hop fan you are doing something that in the back of my head I always hoped would be done. Taking hip hop to another level, word by word. Thank you.
