KRS. Jay is the contemporary standard for proof of concept. but KRS gets us closes to the beginning to start getting into evolutionary trends,… that’s my argument/pitch, at least.

He’s currently second, and i think the deceased should be disqualified for now. no extra points for all that dead people marketing over the last decade.

Tan3000 ⇒ True. I have a KRS Rap Data Pack in the works. I sent you a login to the search tool, what do you think? What type of research would you like to see?

I know ppl say STop CRrying about the lack of representation of women, but come on,….brothers always wanna call us queens but don’t think it’s necessary to include sisters in their rap projects, overviews, criticism of the genre or other. STill CReatin a world where STupidity CRumbles when women ask to be seated at the table. I request you put a sister on your rap pack list, Tahero!

And can’t wait to meet you bro! STunning CReativity shines through your site and life. Best, kyraocity

Hi Kyra. All of the women rappers of note are represented in the database. In fact one reader - Malik Singleton - is currently underwriting the Rapper Gender data collection. Once we have this info I’d like to compare the differences of how women rap about Power, Relationships, Women, Men, etc. versus how men do.

I choose featured artists by determining 1. who’s popular at the time / who will make a buzz and 2. who has hi-res profile pictures in Google images. So to your point, yes I should probably add Nicki Minaj. I can send you a login/password if you want to make your own searches. Thanks for the props!

Hook a sista up! I’d be glad to explore. Also invite your peeps to check out my book The Games Black Girls Play: Learning the Ropes from Double-Dutch to Hip-hop for thinking about issues of gender, race and power in black music making. It’s an award winning book in ethnomusicology. NYU Press published it. Great cover, too.
